Professional Profile:

Chris Leahy has been developing innovative and successful employee benefit programs for over 20 years. His clients value his independent consultative approach, attention to detail and technical depth.

Chris LeahyThe foundation of his expertise in the design, funding, implementation, communication and administration of health & welfare programs stems from his 14 years with a national insurance carrier. He spent his first three years in underwriting, where he led a project team to develop and implement nationally the underwriting process for experience-rated, managed care clients. After less than two years as an account manager, Chris became an account executive, during which time he wrote over $400 million in business, retaining greater than 97% of it. Of the many awards he received during his 14 year tenure, Mr. Leahy values most being recognized by the company with its national award for leadership, dedication and service.

In 2002, Chris moved to a regional consulting and brokerage operation to pursue his desire to partner more directly with clients to craft balanced solutions to meet their employee benefits needs. He also brought this philosophy to the management of the firm through his role as a Partner and his participation on the firm’s marketing committee, health & welfare committee, health care data mining/technology evaluation group and the project team for consumer directed health.

Chris possesses great insight into the many varied and demanding employee benefit issues facing companies today because he has spent nearly two decades working hand-in-hand with employers to help solve these issues by:

  • projecting the 3 to 5 year impact to earnings in order to determine whether to maintain the status quo program, design or adopt “consumerism” based alternatives;
  • determining the optimal financial design, based on client specific risk profile and cash flow demands;
  • analyzing the merits, organizationally and financially of carving-out key components of a program, such as prescription drugs or wellness initiatives;
  • evaluating the benefits to governmental entities of collective purchasing to stretch limited budgets and provide more to their associates;
  • weighing the impact and delivering recommendations regarding legislative and regulatory changes such as Medicare Part D and GASB 45;
  • developing multi-year strategies for companies to better manage their disability and health care programs.

In each of these instances, Chris observed that the needs of the employer were best met when the thrust of the design and execution of any plan or program was aimed at understanding and balancing the needs of both the employer and its employees and their families.

Chris’ commitment to developing such solutions led him to form an independent consulting firm in 2006, when the partnership he had joined was acquired by a publicly-held company. In order to serve the client’s best interest, it is Chris’ strong conviction that the advisor must be truly independent – unencumbered by the pressures to “push” product or satisfy the quarterly margin demands of Wall Street. Leahy Consulting Services’ one and only focus is the client’s needs and Chris understands that long-term success hinges on customizing and delivering “balanced client solutions”.

Community Service: Chris is an active member of Kiwanis, and served as the committee chair for tutoring at Albert Hill Middle School in 2007 and 2008. He also volunteers his time with Children’s Hospital and coaches youth sports.

Education: Chris is a 1988 graduate of Middlebury College
